Shurijo Castle Crowdfunding Project Launched

After seeing the devastating fire that happened in Okinawa at Shurijo Castle, we have set up a crowdfunding project with help from Okinawa University Students.

Shurijo – A tragic loss and a hope to rebuild. Raising money to help with the reparations of this amazing World Heritage site.

■Project Outline

On 31st October 2019, a fire broke out in the early morning in the main hall of Shurijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the capital city of Okinawa Prefecture, Naha.
While there are no reported deaths at the current time for this tragic accident, the loss of such an incredible and important part of Japanese and Okinawan History is overwhelming. After its destruction in the end stages of the Second World War in the Battle of Okinawa, the castle was rebuilt as a state-managed park in 1992, with it gaining UNESCO status in 2000.
This project is being held by the Okinawa University Student Group Horizon, after hearing a large outcry from not just Japanese people horrified at this tragedy but also from repeat visitors in Taiwan and from further afield.

※No commission fees (apart from card transaction fees) will be taken by Japankuru Funding for this project. As well as this while there is a target goal, this project is an all in project so any and all money that is raised by this project will go to the Okinawa Churashima Foundation in accordance with their Shurijo Castle Park Management.

■Project Aim

This project is looking to raise money to help with the eventual rebuilding of such an amazing castle in Okinawa. With so much history being tied to this castle, with it being the islands centre for its government for around 450 years from 1429. The castle itself is registered and known for its fusion of Japanese and Chinese castle construction techniques, creating what was a uniquely designed castle.
