It’s been about half a year since we launched our first project, the Zanmai Sakura Scissors.

The Zanmai Sakura Scissors were made with not just ease of use in mind, but also design and functionality as well, looking to make the user of the scissors happy. Thanks to all the amazing backers that helped to bring it to life, we feel excited to bring to you a new pair of scissors!

For this project, we want to make a pair of scissors that looks to cover what we couldn’t do with the scissors we made in the previous project.

Just like the kitchen scissors from the previous project, these scissors can cut with ease through paper and cloth and so on, with it being made to be able to handle a wide range of materials. Over the past 6 months, we have gone over the last project and looked in different ways to update and upgrade the scissors, and finally have come up with a pair of forged scissors!

With that in mind, using the amazing skills that have been passed down throughout the years in Seki City, and combining that with the cutting edge machines that we have, and finally the actual amazing work that is done by hand by our craftsmen, we have been able to make some really incredible scissors.

We hope that you can enjoy this pair of forged scissors, made only thanks due to the collaboration between old and new!

From long ago, good tools were absolutely necessary in order to make good pieces of work when it came to forging and smithing.

Forging is the process of hitting metal applying pressure which in turn strengthens the metal, while at the same time forcing the metal into the desired shape. In times before, each piece of metal would need to be hit by a hammer by hand, in order to create the desired item. However with technological advances, the way items are made have changed, with heat treatment methods taking the lead, where items can be strengthened after they have been pressed into shape. This type of forging is called cold forging.

※This is the first step of the process, before forging, where the material that will be used is cut out of a solid piece of metal.

 ■The advantages of forging

Compared to casting, forging helps to push the atoms of the material closer together, leaving less space, which in turn means it has a higher tension and is harder. Since it is a stronger material, it also means that when heat is applied it doesn’t warp easily. The fibre flow, the way the metal is aligned in, is also better in a cold forged item as they are continuous, being pushed into shape rather than being cast and forming layers on top of each other. This helps to improve the strength of the item. By hitting metal, we can make some pieces of material longer and bigger, which in turn means that the material is pressed and condensed, which helps to make a stronger metal.

You can see the processes being the forging below.

 ■Our Commitment to Cold Forging

There are various types of forging, and they are used differently depending on the application and concept of the product. The method used for these scissors is called cold forging. By forging with this technique, scissors with excellent hardness and sharpness are produced from special 6A steel. In cold forging, steel is laser cut and forged under 200 tons of pressure. The scissors can be rounded to fit the human finger, and only forging can produce curves that are easy to hold.

Compared to other methods of manufacturing, this method is much more precise, while the face of the scissors are much smoother, and in general are much harder. In regards to manufacturing methods of scissors, this is the best way to do so, with it creating hard, durable scissors that last, while also feeling nice to hold and grip, which overall creates a near perfect item!

※This machine takes the material that has been cut out and presses it into shape using extreme forces.

This is the press used to forge the scissors. The metal is placed into a mould where the metal is then pressed with extreme force into the shape of scissors. Depending on the force used, the pressure forces the material together, making the metal harder and stronger than when it was cut, meaning that the scissors will last for longer. The rounded shape is created by applying this pressure. Over 200 tons of pressure are used when forging. It is down to this style of forging that a completely even thickness can be achieved.

※The leftmost image is the one that is evenly and perfectly thick. It helps to make a strong and durable pair of scissors.

He works on the rounding of the scissors by hand. By working on the profile of the scissors removing bumps and indents, he is able to make the scissors extremely smooth. This type of work is quite difficult, with a lot of this polishing being done on angles that are hard to see, but are needed to get the perfect grip on each pair of scissors. This is done so that no matter who uses the scissors feels comfortable in doing so.

Laser Marking

A special grip on the side of the handle that has been made to help stop the hand slipping. No matter how hard the item you are cutting is, you can firmly grasp the scissors.

Craftsman behind the design of the handle and its functionality. He helps to program the machines to do a lot of the work that would be done by hand, and then finishes the scissors removing the burs and so on by hand to give it a smooth finish.

Each pair of scissors will be marked by a serial number. Each pair with be managed using this number.

※For this project we will be applying a heat treatment to the screws. By doing so, the screws change colour, while also becoming stronger and harder, meaning that they last for longer, as well as taking some of the burden off the scissors when cutting hard objects.

■Focusing on the detailed parts

In order to make the screws more resistant to abrasion and so on, they have been fired(using a special Marusho fire treatment), which helps to make the screws harder as well as reduce any looseness that the scissors may have, overall making the scissors feel better to use.

This is the scissors entering the final stage of finishing. The scissors are checked and adjusted so that the scissors cut from top to bottom with ease. The ideal pair of scissors has a slight gap between the blades.

By adjusting the pivot point (the screw) as well as bending the blades, the gap is created. If the blades are bent too much, they become easy to bend, which makes the scissors unusable. A balance needs to be struck in doing this type of work. In order to meet the needs of various users, we make the scissors able to cut through cloth, canvas, and so on.

Forged scissors compared to mass manufactured scissors are much more durable, and are much longer lasting. As well as this, they hold they brilliant edge for longer.

You can see below in Fig. 1 that at a micro scale, the edge of the blade is extremely fine, letting it cut anything!

The city that we are based in is Seki City, home to one of the 5 method of swords smithing, Mino Den. Swords created using this method of smithing and forging were highly valued and sought after. During the Kamakura Era, two famous craftsmen came to the area, and created many famous swords. This history spanned over 700 years, with swords smithing being passed down the years.

From the end of the Heian Period (794-1185), the demand for swords for Samurai exploded. Swordsmiths in different regions of Japan used one of the five methods to create these swords, Yamato Den (Nara Prefecture)[大和伝(奈良県)], Yamashiro Den (Kyoto Prefecture) [山城伝(京都)], Bizen Den (Okayama Prefecture)[備前伝(岡山)], Sagami Den (Kanagawa Prefecture) [相州伝(神奈川)], and finally Mino Den (Gifu Prefecture)[美濃伝 (岐阜)].

This reason that Mino Den was created was due to the amazing soil found in the area, the abundance of charcoal, and the brilliant quality of the water that ran through the area via the Nagara River, all parts that help to make an amazing sword. From the Maromachi Era and onwards, (1336-1573) more than 300 swordsmiths were born in the area, and after making a variety of amazing blades, and the diligent efforts and skills of the swordsmiths evaluated, Seki City Blades came to be known as [blades that done break or bend, and cut through anything].

It can be said that swords are the predecessor of scissors. The work that goes into the scissors doesn’t stop after making them, but also into the maintenance.

The finishing touches for these scissors are carried out by our skilled craftsmen by hand and not by robots or machines.

It takes delicate care and attention to make the perfect pair of scissors. The work that our craftsmen do we are extremely proud of.

We hope that you too are proud of the work they do when you use them.

Thanks to amazing amount of people that backed the last project, we wanted to try hit a larger target and have created left-handed scissors, letting you choose between the pair that will fit you more comfortably.
