Story

One of a kind pocket watches and a special leather strap inspired by Japanese Samurai armour.

1.Patented in Japan! Wear unique antique pocket watches around your wrist thanks to a special made in Japan attachment!

2.Each one is a valuable unique item! Each one made to order, with no two being alike!

3.Used in armour for generals during the Warring State Era! Traditional Japanese Leather becomes a unique Watch Strap

The UDEMACI watch strap, letting you wear antique watches on your wrist. The name comes from ude(腕), which means arm, and maku(巻く) which means to wrap.

A wristwatch made from pocket watches that are over 100 years old and are all unique and one of a kind.

・A Patented unique attachment

We have created a unique attachment that has been patented here in Japan.

We don’t wish for any imitation items or misinformation to reach our customers.

When we started trials and prototyping, we tried out a ratchet style variant, along with many other types of shapes and methods, but we took into consideration, the strong fit that we wanted on the watch, the lowest possible weight, not hiding any part of the pocket watch, and how easy it is to remove the pocket watch, as well as all of this, the engraved cases that some pocket watches have, we were able to come upon the design that we have now.

Using SUS304, a high-quality non-magnetic stainless steel as the metal, we took it upon ourselves to create each one not by using a metal die mould, but by machining each one individually.

The watches that are used to make [UDEMACI] are all antique pocket watches, that are from 70-100 years old.

Each one was made individually by hand, with the hands, dials, cases, and crowns all having their own personality.

There is no two that are alike.

Pocket watches, unlike wrist watches, have no strap, and therefore a lot of thought goes in the design of the timepiece itself.

They are the lingering remains of an age of pocket watches which were made with a lot of emphasis on design.

Using leather from domestic Wagyu cows, the strap uses a fusion of traditional Japanese tanning and lacquer work on Himeji Kurozan Leather.

Resistant against rubbing and chafing, it was said to have been widely used during the Warring States era in samurai generals’ armour and helmets.

The thread that is used is also a special thread.

It is made in the Iseshima area in Mie Prefecture, which is famous for Ise Jingu and the Iseshima G7 Summit.

Known as the “beautiful country”, thanks to its abundance of nature, it is also home to Ise Ebi or Japanese spiny lobster, and the thread used is made from old worn lobster nets, which stand out beautifully against the black leather.

We wish to help with the achievement of SDGs to the best of our ability.

As stated before,  [UDEMACI] is the combination of amazing antique pocket watches as well as our patented attachment, and finally the wonderful watch strap.

The antique pocket watches used are from a time where each timepiece would be made individually with a great deal of care and attention put into them. The watches use pure silvers, pure golds, platinum, natural rubies, and natural diamonds and so on, depending on the design set out, and each one made to the very highest limit of the maker, who utilised all the skills and techniques that they could that were available to them at the time.

If a wrist watch was made with the same level of attention to detail and care, then it wouldn’t be uncommon to see that watch be sold for over 1 million yen (~$8700 USD).

Thus the UDEMACI was born, as a way of reviving some amazing watches which are filled to the brim with amazing design sense and elegance.

The UDEMACI, letting you wear antique watches on your wrist. The name comes from ude(腕), which means arm, and maku(巻く) which means to wrap.

The pocket watch has a rather long history, with the use of pocket watches dating back even in the 1600s.

At the time, the amount of makers that were able to make these pocket watches were few, and so they were only owned by royalty and titled nobles. As the development of watch making proceeded, the quality and the manufacturing process became much more uniform, meaning that many more people were able to get their hands on one. Watch brands that have over 100 years of history, mostly have their origins in the production and selling of pocket watches.

Today, there are many people around the world that love to add these amazing types of watches to their collection, as they are antique pieces of famous brands, or because the movement of the watches are unique or the design is exceptionally beautiful or interesting.

When it comes to the charms behind antique pocket watches, one of the most fascinating points are the engravings found on many of them.

These engravings could be found not only on the case but also as minute detailing on the dial faces themselves. The work that goes into do so is extremely time consuming, and so seen as a lost style that isn’t present on many watches today.

Another fascinating point about antique pocket watches is the movement found inside.

The production of movements at the time was painstaking work, that needed a lot of time and attention to detail, and are extremely different to the movements that are produced today for wristwatches. The faces of the movement are polished, and the edges are also polished and rounded.

When it comes to movements, there are a vast array of points that you could focus on, and it is these pocket watches that high end wrist watch movements today take after.

Present day highly valuable watches are some of the only watches that can use these similar methods to produce movements, making these antique pocket watches also something to be desired.

Antique pocket watches are a piece of tangible history, containing amazing craftsmanship from many years ago, giving them even more value.

It’s why we at TradTrad are rather uneasy at the thought of these beautiful antique pocket watches being lost.

In just 100 years, the parts used in the pocket watches as well as the pocket watches themselves have decreased dramatically. In 2020, Swiss and French Watch making was recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage by Unesco, and SEIKO here in Japan was also recognised as Mechanical Engineering Heritage.

If watchmaking today has been seen as something that is intangible cultural heritage, then the precursor to this watchmaking found in pocket watches should also be recognised as such.

Pocket watches as they are named, would be stored in the pocket of your jacket or trousers as you walked about.

However, watches today are normally carried via wearing them on the wrist.

We want to bring a new way to enjoy these amazing watches, and to keep them in the forefront of people's minds, by allowing you to wear them on your wrist much like you would a normal wristwatch!

These watches suit both a casual and business setting, and can be enjoyed in a multitude of ways!

Using domestically reared Kuroge Wagyu Leather, and applying special traditional tanning and lacquering techniques, Himeji Kurozan leather is created.

Given the nickname as Leather’s Black Diamond, Kurozan leather actually looks beautiful as if a lot of diamond dust has been inlaid into it. The leather is rather durable and resistant to abrasion, and is used in chest armour in kendo (a japanese martial art using wooden swords) and so on, and during the Warring States era, it was used in armour for generals, and was extremely valuable.

【From the Himeji Kurozan Homepage https://himejikurozan.net/about】

At the 2014 Hong Kong APLF MM&T (Materials, Manufacturing & Technology)  Award Show, Himeji Kurozan Leather was award Best Leather in Show, a first for Japanese leather, thanks to the way the tanning process brings out the indents of the grain to the best it can, and utilises the drying and hardening of the lacquer, this Japanese leather is some of the best leather that can be obtained,

【Certified Eco-leather】

Without using chemicals to the best of their ability, this leather is tanned in a way that is kind to the environment, as well as being extremely safe to humans as well.

※ Tanning is essential to use the hides that come from the cows. Hides can’t be used in the state that they are taken, as with time they decompose and become stiff.

In order to make this leather soft, this tanning plays a large part, and as well as that the durability of hide is also increased.

The result of this amazing tanning process and coating that brings out the beauty of the storied hide is this wonderful leather.

Ise Shima, made famous due to the Ise Shrine and the G7 Ise Summit held there, is found in Mie Prefecture.

It is said to be “Beautiful country” and is abundant with nature, and is home to the Japanese Spiny Lobster. It is the nets that are use to catch spiny lobsters that is the basis for the thread that we use for the straps.

In recent years, the nets and how to dispose of them have become a large problem for the area. It is this problem that we wished to help with, taking in these used nets, undoing them by hand, and then resewing them into the straps.

We wanted to do this in order to help with regards to SGSs, which has become a large part of our mission.

  ・Unique Antique Wristwatches

We want to bring to you unique antique wristwatches. There are two ways of taking about this, vintage and antique. Antique are curios that until recently had no true determination. However, the United States passed a law in regards to customs, that declared any handmade item, or art over 100 years old as being an antique. Therefore any of the watches that are over 100 years old are able to be called unique antique watches.

Today, many watches have become digital, using the latest technology.

Of course, we don’t use watches that have this latest technology, in fact it's not possible to even measure your heartbeat.

However, one thing that we can say that we have that is above all this is that each watch is unique. Each watch holds a story of many many years.

We think that this is one of the most interesting points about these watches.

The antique pocket watches are carefully one by one worked on to make them like new.

Our engineer became involved in the watch industry at around 16, becoming completely entranced by watches, reading as much as he could get his hands on, and learning as much as he could about watches as well as the various makers, eventually falling upon the pocket watches made in the Meiji era  (1868-1912), where the ideals and charms of these pocket watches became a near obsession of his. From there, he took it upon himself to learn about the processes of watches, being able to take them apart and learn even more. Through the pocket watch industry, he was able to meet various other people that would be able to teach him more, and it is through all this that has led to where he is today.

The CEO of TradTrad learnt to maintain and service pocket watches by himself. From there, he started to sell pocket watches by himself. After receiving a request from a customer, asking if there was a way to make a stylish pocket watch into a wristwatch, after some market research, he found that there wasn’t anything like what the customer wanted, and from there took it upon himself to create it himself. The concept behind the UDEMACI is the idea that “there is still wonder and joy in older items” and looking to create something new from something traditional, and with that TradTrad was founded.

Each UDEMACI is a unique watch.

Over the past 100 years, these amazing watches have become even more valuable. And as more time passes, the amount available will also decline.

As the amount available is limited, we want people to fall in love with the UDEMACI, and help to protect and keep these precious watches alive.

Due to this lack of availability, the pocket watches available in the project are all unique, so if you find a watch that you like, we recommend you back it before it gets snapped up!

We will be sending the UDEMACI in a box that has been wrapped with a traditional Japanese Furoshiki.

Furoshiki have been used since the Heian Period (794-1185) as a way to present items to nobles. The use of furoshiki wrapping for normal items within the general population started in the Meiji Period (1868-1912) when people gave presents of pocket watches.

From many centuries ago until today, Japanese people have used this traditional furoshiki to give gifts that are considered to be important and to be treasured.
