With This Traditional Japanese Omi Linen Towel, You Can Say Goodbye to All the Downsides That Comes With Thick Towels

Denim style towel yet to be seen before!

Are you the type of person that thinks good towels = fluffy towels?

While we know fluffy towels are great and feel comforting, they can be a bit of a hassle to deal with after using them. Thick fluffy towels can be hard to dry properly and be bulky taking up storage space and filling up your washer and dryer, along with more downsides. For that reason we have developed a towel with a new sensation that overturns the conventional concept of towels and eliminates some of the drawbacks in towels made from cotton.

Our towel is 100% linen and made in Japan. By the looks of it you may be a bit hesitant to call it a towel, but not only is it compact and not bulky, it also absorbs water excellently and dries quickly. Furthermore, since linen is gentle on the skin, it makes it an excellent material.

You can really experience the greatness of the material in the summer when you can use it to wipe off moisture easily and see it dry quickly. It can easily be carried around and used for various purposes. It is a towel that can better your life and matches the lifestyle of a new era.

Linen is a material that can actually absorb more water than cotton can. Linen's standard moisture regain is 12%, while cotton is only 8.5%, making it absorb moisture faster and better than cotton pile towels.

In the textile absorbency test JIS L 1907 drip method, the accreditation criteria for certain Japanese towels are within 3 seconds, but the Nenilimo towels absorbed water within 2! The results prove its high quality.

The towel dries incredibly fast. Even after washing, it will completely dry in an hour and a half.

Not only do Nenilimo towels dry quickly because they are thin, it is also thanks to the straight structure of the linen fibers that allows moisture and heat to escape quickly. It dries quickly, which helps prevents bacteria and mold growth and unpleasant odors.

Despite not being a pile fabric, there is hardly the same stiffness you would normally experience with linen. Rather, it has an elegant glossy texture that makes you want to rub it against your cheeks.

Furthermore, with the fabric being highly absorbent, it can suck up any moisture just by placing it on your skin. There is no need to rub or wipe dry, making it a towel that is gentle on the skin.

The more you use Nenilimo towels, the better they feel and become more adapted to your skin allowing you to enjoy them for a long time.

Linen's fibers are strong and that strength increases once it contains moisture. Its durability can withstand repeated daily washings and ensures long time use.

Originally linen is not stretchy, but by applying special technology and skill gives Nenilimo's fabric some elasticity. So you are able to sense of how easy it is to use even when you use it to dry your hair.

It does not easily fall off and does not leave fibers behind, so you can wipe the dishes cleanly.

It is so thin compared to cotton towels which helps save you from huge bulky loads and the amount of water you use in the washer.

The lineup we have developed for this project includes a large bath towel, a hand towel, and a washcloth. They come in handy in times when you are going out and need a towel to carry around.

You can carry it around with you easily and it not take up much space. For instance when you are traveling or for outdoor events such as camping or going to the gym. It is nice that even if you bring the towel back home while it is wet, you will not have an issue with any bad odors that come from it.

It also makes a great kitchen cloth. Its abilities allow you to use it in a variety of ways.

Linen is a natural cloth that is woven from flax plant stems and is known for its resilience, durability, and absorbency. Hemp has the same characteristics but unlike hemp, linen is a more thin and flexible fiber that creates a soft, glossy fabric. Linen is "lan" in French. Just as the word "lingerie" was coined from women's underwear made of high-quality linen, linen fabric is comfortable to wear on bare skin. “Lin” is French for linen, and just like with “lingerie” which was made of high-quality linen years ago, linen has been a comfortable and intimate fabric to wear against bare skin.

Linen is one of the most ancient and sacred fabrics, that was woven and worn in Egypt around 5000 BC. In ancient Egyptian tombs linen was even found being used as the cloth to wrap mummies in.

Functions/Features

The fibers are not just fine and thin, there are long and narrow hollowed spaces in the center of the fibers as well as numerous crevices and narrow hollowed spaces on the surface giving it a porous structure. It is because of that it is able to absorb moisture and dry so quickly and easily.

The material has excellent absorption and drying capabilities as well as temperature and moisture control allowing you to feel cool and comfortable even in summer.

Linen grows with very little effort and is resistant to pests so you do not need to use pesticides or chemical fertilizers making it an environmentally friendly plant and textile. In agricultural crops around the world, roughly 60% of the pesticides are used in cultivating cotton. The environment is already in a serious state with soil pollution, but growing cotton requires a lot of pesticides which can be also harmful to the producers. It is that reason many people consider and love linen, which requires almost no pesticides, for its natural and sustainable factors to both the environment and those incorporated in making it.

We used fine quality Omi linen for the material. Omi is an old province located in the east of Shiga Prefecture, where Japan’s largest lake Lake Biwa is and has long prospered in the linen textile industry. Using a process that is particularly unique to Japan's ancient traditional industry and can only be done in Omi, we have created a buoyant feel with linen fiber.

Linen Is a Difficult Material to Process

Since linen is a variety of thick and short fibers it is difficult to spin into thread. The coarseness of the material also makes it easy for neps and slubs to occur in the yarn. This is why it takes a lot of time, effort, and skill to properly do the spinning process, applying pressure, tearing, drying, and making it into a uniform and fine fiber. So you end up getting beautiful fibers that are made from these specially made threads by dexterous craftsmen. Omi’s craftsmanship in weaving has been passed down for over 500 years. Where there are of course highly skilled craftsmen as well as a history of weaving and making kimono sashes. The towels we have prepared for this project are not just woven, but in order for the fabric to feel great against the skin we also post process it.

Introducing the Craftsman

Tsuji Bungoro

Born in 1935, 87 years old

When Bungoro was 18 he entered the linen industry and has continued working with linen materials for the last 70 years. From yarn spinning to underwear, outerwear materials, and bedding (linen cotton), Bungoro has been developing and selling all kinds of materials related to linen.

1. Linen Denim <New>

This towel uses a navy dye in the weft thread which gives it its denim like color and texture. Since we do not actually use any indigo dyed material, color fading or transfer will not be a concern like it would be with real denim.

We know there are an array of denim items, but perhaps denim towels have yet to take the stage. That is why we wanted to take this never before seen item and commercialize it exclusively on Kickstarter.

2. Ivory (Natural)

Due to linen being a natural fiber, we wanted to utilize that and use its natural color without dying or color processing whatsoever. The color helps keep dirt from standing out on the towel, making it a popular choice.

In order to bring out the denim texture, we had to carefully change the weaving method.

Just like with actual denim, we wanted to create a different look on the front and back sides so we used a twill weave. The navy warp thread and weft thread are woven over one another at a ratio of 1:3. You then have the warp thread on the front side and the weft thread is on the back so that it is a different color. By increasing the density of the threads your weave will comparatively result in a thick fabric. With twill weave being the same type of weave as denim, you will get the same durable result.

Plain weave is considered one of the most basic and fundamental weaves. You pull the weft thread (horizontal thread) over the first warp thread (vertical thread), then continue to weave under and over one another so that both sides are the same.

Hanging Loop Attached

  • Rather than rubbing to wipe, try gently dabbing to absorb the moisture. Please note that strong and aggressive rubbing may damage your skin.
  • Please note that using fabric softener when washing may reduce the absorbency.
  • After washing, smooth out the wrinkles and hang to dry. We as that you please avoid putting it in the dryer since it can accelerate the deterioration of the fibers.

Nenilimo represents a concept that begins with the four syllables Ne-ni-li-mo in Japanese.

Ne: 年間 "Nenkan" <Yearly> | Making convenient things that can be used all year round.

Ni: 日本 "Nihon" <Japan> | Protecting Japan's traditional industry, Omi linen.

Li: リネン "Linen" <Linen> | Bringing out the charms of linen.

Mo: ものづくり "Monozukuri" <Manufacturing>|Bringing smiles to the creators and users through manufacturing.

We usually work as a general apparel manufacturer called "CAITAC FAMILY" here in Japan. The reason why we actually developed linen denim towels is because there are many people within our company that likes denim. As a company we are the best in Japan, making over 1 million pairs of denim per year.

Every day we are engaging in the world of clothes wanting to find good things from Japan. There are a number of wonderful items from Japan that have gotten a lot of attention and became popular, like the imabari towel and Okayama denim, but there is still so much out there that people are yet to know about. One of those being Shiga prefecture’s Omi linen, something that the charms of the linen fabric that has been passed down from ancient Japan really impressed us.

There are still a number of hidden local specialties in Japan, and all of them are equally great. On a global scale they are still relatively small, but we still want people all over the world to know about them and know the type of craftsmanship that can be done in these places. It is with those thoughts and desires that brought us to launch this project. We sincerely appreciate your support!
