Inspired from nature & Japan's traditional designs and history!

Takaben Woodworks

2022.6.28

Wood is a natural material that has played an important part in Man’s life since ancient times. The warmth, soft grain and scent of wood can help us relax from our busy modern life and refresh. The expressive grain of the wood is a complete design in itself, but we wanted to create a completely unique card case by adding a Japanese traditional design to it, without spoiling the natural beauty of the wood.

There are a total of 7 different available wood carvings. Among them, the 3 designs representing the family crest of famous Japanese Sengoku warlords give off a special presence! In Japan, family crests were used during the Warring States period during battles, where they were printed on flags in order to recognize enemies from allies. These highly original card cases designed with the family crests of the 3 most famous Sengoku warlords will give you a taste of the Samurai spirit!

On top of securely holding your cards with no risk of them slipping out, the body of the card case is made of a material that prevents skimming, making it a suitable case to carry credit cards. With a 63mm (2.48in) width, it firmly holds any card of international standard size with no risk of dropping even if you shake the case. A recommended companion for a cashless lifestyle!

We, at Takaben Wood Works, are craftsmen who usually manufacture wood fixtures and fittings (doors, windows, shoji, fusuma, etc.), with among us craftsmen skilled in the art of “Kumiko”, a traditional woodworking technique used especially in traditional Japanese-style rooms. These card cases are carefully crafted one by one by the skilled hands of our company’s craftsmen!

Our card cases do not use this technique called Kumiko, but we decided to launch this project, our first product meant for personal use, in the hope that we could get more people to know about the art of traditional Japanese woodworking! There are a lot of amazing traditional handicrafts and skilled craftsmen in Japan, but, sadly, the demand for Japanese-style rooms is rapidly decreasing. Traditional craftsmanship is about to disappear due to a lack of successors to inherit these techniques.

We believe it is very sad that this aspect of Japanese culture, considered unique across the globe, and techniques fostered and inherited by craftsmen through generations are slowly disappearing. And so we started this project, hoping that people all over the world will get to experience and know Japanese culture better.

In this project, a few designs are Japanese traditional motifs, also inspired from Kumiko patterns! Being able to send these card cases, crafted from wood, a material as old as the Earth, by craftsmen who mastered traditional Japanese woodworking techniques, and engraved with emblematic Japanese motifs and symbols to people around the world would also represent the revitalization of Japanese traditional culture.

2 types of material: Walnut / Cherry

7 different motifs/patterns: 3 family crests, 4 Japanese motifs

Each of these motifs has its own meaning!

① Wild Sakura on Tortoise Shell

This hexagonal pattern, designed after the tortoise shell symbolizes longevity. Combined with a wild cherry blossom pattern, this combination gives off a cute vibe!

②Shippō pattern

“Shippō” is a Buddhist word referring to seven treasures. By representing never ending connections and expansion, it represents the wish for prosperity, harmony, peacefulness and abundant human relations!

③ Yagasuri pattern

This pattern shows shapes like those of arrow feathers and represents the act of “striking home” or “advancing straight ahead” without looking back in a positive way!

④ Checkered Hemp Leaves

A design combining a checkered pattern, also called Ichimatsu, with hemp leaves motifs. With its pattern repeating without interruption, the Ichimatsu represents the prosperity of one’s lineage and business expansion!

① Oda Mokko

This crest is the family crest of Nobunaga Oda who aimed to unify Japan by force with his motto: "Tenka Fubu". It is said to be designed after the Japanese quince and a bird nest, symbolizing the prosperity of one’s descendants. Nobunaga Oda himself is known for being a strict and composed man, skilled in the art of war, who boldly devised elaborate stratagems.

② Goshichi no Kiri (Paulownia crest)

From the start, Paulownias are known to be magnificent trees. It is the crest of the Toyotomi clan and is nowadays used as the emblem of the Japanese Government. Toyotomi Hideyoshi achieved national unification and led to the closing of the Sengoku period. He rose from a peasant background as a retainer of the prominent lord Oda Nobunaga to become one of the most powerful men in Japan, and after winning the battle for succession, succeeded to Nobunaga after his death.

③ Mitsuba-aoi (Three Leaves of Hollyhock)

It is the “mallow flower” design used and cherished by the Tokugawa clan for generations. Tokugawa Ieyasu lived his early years as a hostage and later won the battle of Sekigahara and became the highest authority in the country, following Nobunaga and Hideyoshi. He then founded the Tokugawa Shogunate (Edo Shogunate) and the Tokugawa clan built a peaceful era for over 200 years.

We are a company that was founded in 1963 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2013. Each product is manufactured with care by skilled craftsmen who have inherited the techniques to craft Japanese fittings and fixtures. The traditional woodworking technique called "Kumiko" is a delicate technique to assemble finely chopped wood pieces into a geometric pattern without using nails, by making grooves, holes, and tenons on the wood and adjusting it with a plane, saw, chisel, etc. The geometric patterns are made by inserting small wood pieces called “leaves” into the latticed frame, forming various shapes.

By incorporating the designs and sensibility of the new generation, and the recent digital technologies to techniques cultivated over many years, our craft also keeps evolving!
