100% Cotton Made in Japan Yukata That Anyone Can Wear Easily

Brand New Step

2021.8.6

We are a factory brand "Nanafu" from Sumida, Tokyo.

Nanafu is a "Yukata Loungewear" brand that was launched in October last year by a designer and a cut-and-sew factory in Asakusa.

Kimonos are difficult because even if you are interested in them they can be a challenge to put on, but Nanafu's Yukata Loungewear is simple and easy to wear, like a bathrobe. At a time when travel is restricted, we thought it would be great to give people a sense of being in Japan at their own home. With that in mind, we started this Kickstarter project. Due to height differences, we will also produce and launch sizes up to 3L (XXL) for overseas customers.

Nanafu is designed to blend in with modern lifestyles by using the cotton material used in everyday clothing. Not only that, but because it uses 100% natural high-performance, high-quality cotton, it feels great on the skin! The material has three advantaging points: cool sensation, moisture release, and quick-drying water absorption, so you can spend the hot season comfortably!

Furthermore, by applying bio-mercerized processing, it is a comfortable material that has a beautiful silky luster, super soft, and an outstanding feel. Because it uses stretchable material, you can wear it comfortably without it tightening or pulling.

Since the yukata is washable it can be used like ordinary room wear. In addition, ultra-long cotton is stronger than other cotton and does not easily pill, so you can expect it to last a long time. Just passing through your sleeves will tingle your senses and your time at home will be a little extra special. We bring freshness and fulfillment to new everyday life with this charming Yukata Loungewear that anyone can easily wear.

 The Haori

When you go out wearing Nanafu, it is recommended to wear a haori over the yukata.

Haori is like a jacket that is always included at Japanese hot spring inns. By using a pinhead weave, which is often used for suits, in a cool and stylish material like linen, the appearance changes depending on the angle of the light that hits it allowing you to enjoy its various expressions.

In addition, linen has breathability and quick-drying properties, and by adding cotton which helps absorb sweat, is stretchable, and easily washable, it makes the haori suitable for summer.

It also includes a pocket that allows you to carry your phone or a small wallet.

The Obi

By adding an "outer obi" it creates that finalized yukata look!

Nanafu yukata relax wear can be worn without an obi, but for those who want to enjoy a more authentic style, we offer an obi in two colors, white and gray. The cool linen-based material enhances the feeling of going out for a little outing or a festival.

By all means, try wearing the obi with your Yukata Loungewear.

*Haori and outer obi are optional

It is said that the origin of yukata began with the spread of public baths and aristocrats in the Heian period wore them so that they would not get burned by the steam when they took a steam bath (a sauna in modern times).

The etymology of yukata was said to be "yukatabira" (a single-layer absorbent bathrobe worn during or after a bath), so it became a yukata, and in the middle of the Edo period, it became possible to wear even for a little outing, which is similar to the way it is now.

Haori's roots are said to be something men wore to keep their upper body clean from dust. Even in the Edo period, it was basically considered men's clothing, but in the latter half of the Edo period, it is said that women began to wear haori by the geisha Fukagawa who would dress up as and perform as a man.

After the Meiji era, the haori became popular in both men's and women’s fashion and for wearing in the cold.

The reason why we started producing these yukata relax wear is to keep the sewing industry of “MADE IN JAPAN” alive , which is being replaced by overseas imports. In addition, we decided to create the "modern remake of Japanese clothes" from the desire to expand Japan’s yukata culture to the world and let people freely incorporate it in modern times. Everything from materials to sewing, printing, and finishing is made in Japan, and we deliberately use western clothing materials so that it doesn't become too Japanese.

Carefully Manufacturing Clothes for 70 Years, One at a Time!

One of the factories that Nanafu uses for sewing has been making clothes for more than 30 years for two generations, and currently the owning couple is making them one by one by hand. A cheerful and friendly wife and a gentle and honest husband are working and making Nanafu's products in a very cozy atmosphere. You can feel the history that has been accumulated by witnessing the amazing speed of craftsmanship and the detailed and careful work.

In the last 10 years, the number of Japanese apparel craftsmen and factories has been decreasing, making it difficult to hand down. Among them, top-class craftsmen in Japan are gathered and created with a confined number of members. This is why it would make us happy if you could experience the great quality of these fine handcrafted garments that are made in Japan.
