Discover amazing 1300 year old traditional Japanese jointery in beautiful puzzle form, that utilizes brilliant Japan-produced wood!

2022.9.21

In Japan, since long ago, special wooden joinery techniques have been used to build residential buildings and religious buildings and temples. This joinery technique is called Tsugite.

These methods and processes have been passed down, as the joints that were created are known for being exceedingly strong, with knowledge of various joints letting the craftsman appeal to others, as well as having interesting designs, and being rather complicated to put together.

But unfortunately things in recent years have changed, with only a few carpenters that specialise in building temples inheriting the skills used, meaning the chance to encounter these special joinery techniques and become hands-on with them have significantly decreased.

We don’t want this amazing crafting technique to vanish from existence, and we want to bring it to the rest of the world! That’s why we started this project.

What is Tsugite - Japanese traditional building joints

Tsugite「継手(つぎて)」is used when the wood that the joiner wishes to use isn’t long enough, and is a special technique of joining two pieces of wood together.

This technique is special in the way that it connects the pieces of wood without using nails or other fittings.

It is largely used in the building of Shinto Shrines and Buddhist Temples, and is a traditional Japanese building technique.

Tsugite joinery has various forms, ranging from extremely easy to make to exceedingly complicated.

When these types of joints are given to children to try out, it is a great puzzle solving toy that can help them to improve their critical and creative thinking skills

It is also great for adults as well, having the same effect, being used for over 1300 years as a great way to help stimulate the brain, prevent decline in brain function, and as a general therapy puzzle.

This makes for an amazing wooden educational tool that can be used by people of all ages, alone or together as a family!

This product brings together a variety of different joints, dovetail joints and eccentric joints, looking to show them off in various different ways.

How do you think you can unlink the joints?

[Four sided Dovetail joints (四方蟻継ぎ(しほうありつぎ)) ]

With this joint, each side looks the same, and it looks like it is impossible to put the joints together or take them apart.

Here’s how it fits together

A. You can move the joints at a 45 degree angle to each other, letting it just slot in.

[Basara Joint (婆娑羅継ぎ(ばさらつぎ))]

Used in the support pillar found at Osaka Castle’s Main Gate, when looking from the east and west sides of the pillar, it looks like a normal dovetail joint, but looking from the south and north sides, they look like they are just slotted together at an angle. It is due to this that without looking into it further, the joint looks to be impossible to put together.

It wasn’t until 1983, after an X-ray was taken of the pillar, that the way the joint worked was discovered, and until then it was thought of as a “Mystery Joint”.

In regards to this joint, we hope that you take it upon yourself to see how to put together and remove the joint.

[Temple specialised carpentry techniques] x [Precision processing]

By reproducing carpentry techniques that were made for building temples using special precision, we can create a fit that isn’t possible by human hands.

With this manufacturing method, you can only remove it one way, and a wedge isn’t needed to stop the wood from falling out of place.

Using Carpenter-Selected Japanese Hinoki Cypress and Japanese Zelkova

Japanese hinoki cypress and Japanese zelkova are both exceedingly high quality wood that have been used for centuries in the construction of various buildings and famous temples and shrines.

Zelkova was used at Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto for the Stage of Kiyomizu, for the pillar supports and so on.

The grain of this wood is also beautiful. The texture of wood gives off a natural warmth, as well as having a subtle scent that lends itself to giving off a natural relaxing sensation.

Japanese hinoki cypress has a beautiful glossy and shiny grain that is also high quality, and is also brilliantly durable.

It too has a subtle aroma that helps you to relax.

A Natural Oil Finish

Even if you were to get the oil in your mouth, it would be safe! This oil is made from safe botanical materials.

It doesn’t affect the wood's ability to breathe, meaning that you can have the puzzle around for years to come!

New For Kickstarter!

For this project, we have created it with a special roof, which looks to make the temple look more realistic!

By doing so, we think that after you have completed the puzzle, it will have more of an impact as piece of your interior design!
