Updated to help support you outdoors and now in low cut fashion!! Experience traditional Japanese footwear in a whole new light!

2022.9.13

We’re back after our first successful Kickstarter campaign after receiving a lot of positive feedback! This time we look to bring to you a new pair of shoes that looks to support you in your outdoor and running activities even more, with increased functionality. The design is also more modern, but also with Japanese motifs entwined, with the Sanada Belt being one of them! We hope you look forward to getting a pair to sub in for your other Sports Jog every so often!

The Tabi Sneaker is built upon traditional Japanese shoes and socks, the jika tabi (地下足袋) and tabi (足袋) which have a specialised design, and we look to bring this design into the modern day, making trainers that are comfortable and perfect for everyday lifestyle needs.

Tabi(足袋(たび)) are traditional Japanese socks, that are split in the middle, which have been used in Japan for centuries. They can still be seen in modern day Japan, during traditional events, such as festivals, or ceremonies, as well as in traditional theatres and so on. Those that try on a kimono here may also be able to wear them!

Although these are traditional Jaapnese footwear, they have seemingly become popular overseas in recent years.

The Sports Jog AIR looks to be a bridge between the old and the new, looking to take on this old design, keeping the older beneficial functions of the traditional tabi, and combine them with modern upgrades and functions. We look to make them into shoes you can’t wait to wear! Not only just fashionable, we feel that they have many benefits to wearing them.

With these types of shoes, where the toes are split, it allows you to move your toes more independently than if you were using normal shoes, which in turn lets you grip the ground easier. This means especially on rough ground, you can move your weight with ease, helping you to keep your balance, and making you feel more secure while you move about.

・Improve your ability to workout!

As you your toes are separated, you can put more power easily into your toes separately, making it easier to push with your feet. This allows you to shift your weight easily as well. The shoes are made to fit your feet snugly as well letting them respond to smaller movements.

・Looking to help protect your feet

Shoes that many people wear today are quite stiff, especially in the middle of the shoe. This can lead to fallen arches, which then can mean that the burden on the back and the knees is increased. The Tabi Sneakers look to help with this problem, allowing for your feet to feel free, and giving your toes a sense of freedom, being able to move with ease. We’ve also added an air cushion to the sole to help reduce the shocks to the feet as you walk or run, protecting your soles, especially your arches.

When wearing the shoes, you can also put more force into your toes easier, letting you adjust your centre of gravity, helping you to keep your posture easier, meaning that you can protect your back easier. As well as this, by correcting your posture, you can also help protect your feet against ailments that occur from walking for too long incorrectly.

・Reduces Abrasion

As you can see in the illustration below, by creating space between your big toe and index toe, it can eliminate the abrasion between the two, which can be a cause of discomfort if worn for a long time. This lets you wear your shoes for longer than you normally would be able to!

Thanks to the use of a fabric that is mesh like, it allows for your feet to breathe easily, without them becoming stuffy and hot. This is great for those that like to wear shoes for a long time but stress out about them being too stuffy.

In order to help you shift your weight about easier as you walk, we have created a cushioned heel that is even better than before! The insole is also slightly elastic to help you for when you want to walk for long periods. This is great for those that love to jog or walk or run, helping to lessen the burden on your body.

For this pair of shoes, we had the supervision of a trainer, who helped us to produce an item that helps to keep the wearer’s posture correct, while also walking in the right way as well. With this pair of Tabi Sneakers, we are using a special type of sole, which looks to help you walk correctly. This sole helps improve your balance, while also being better for your feet and soles.

Helping you walk the right way!

For most people, they walk normally, from heel to toe, as indicated in the picture above. First with their heel hitting the floor, then the mid of the foot, starting from the outside moving in, then heel raising up, bending the first three toes and smoothly transitioning to the next foot.

However, some people walk flat footed, with their whole foot hitting the floor at the same time. When doing so, the toes and heel aren’t used, with all the power coming from the calf and thigh muscles. This leads to a decline in foot strength, and eventually fallen arches, meaning it’s harder to keep your balance, and increasing the pressure on the back and knees.

After wearing the Tabi Sneakers, if you are more mindful of your posture as your walk, the effects are even easier to see. By walking correctly, you can help reduce the burden on your back and knees, and in turn improve the strength of your feet.

We hope that by using the Tabi Sneakers, you can continue to improve the way you walk and that they become a great tool for you.

A Sanada Himo cord is a long and narrow woven cord made from thread made of cotton or silk placed vertically or warped, which is then woven with a thicker cotton thread horizontally or weft.  This makes the thread rather strong while also having an interesting design.

Often confused with kumihimo which is braided threads, the Sanada Himo is a woven item.

Sanada Himo are woven to to be flat, with this type of cord being said to be one of the narrowest in the world.By using this cord as one of the shoelace holes, the shoes feel more fit on your feet, and reduce the stress you feel with other shoes as your feet can’t more around as much.

During the Warring States period, Sanada Yukimura was one of the well known heroes of the time, and it is from him that this special woven cord takes its name. It is said that he often used this type of cord for the sword knot attaching the scabbard of his katana to his belt, as well as in other parts of his armour.

Samurai used special colours which acted as family crests, and it allowed for those who survived battles to recognise who’s piece of armour or weapon it was just by looking at the colours. This was particularly useful when it came to people that had died or were injured beyond recognition.

Of course today we use tape or so on to tag things that are ours, but back then this wasn’t possible, and this method of tying things with a special piece of fabric was done, and Sanada Himo was widely used when doing so.

How to measure your feet

  • Open your legs to be equal to your shoulders.

  • Put your weight equally on your feet

  • Look straight ahead.

  • Have someone measure your feet, if there is a difference between the two, choose the larger of the sizes.

Items you need:

Sheet of paper (If possible you can print off a sizing chart from below), a pencil, a set square, a ruler (30cm long at least), and a tape measure

You can find the measuring sheet here

If you print the above, please do so on A4 Paper. 2 sheets will print, so please fit them together and use them to measure.

●Measuring the length of your foot (For those that have printed off the sheet start from [2])

[1]Draw a straight line across the paper using the ruler and set square.

[2]With the very edge of your heel at the first point (A) place your foot on the straight line and place the set square at the end of the toe that points out the furthest.

[3] From here draw a straight line and then measure the distance between (A) and (B)

Maintenance

■How to wash

You can wash the Sport Jog AIR by hand. When you do, please use a neutral detergent. Use cold or warm water, and remove any dirt from the shoe and then rinse the shoe over again.

■How to dry

Please don’t dry in direct sunlight or use a dryer, but instead place in a well ventilated place in the shade, shape the shoe properly and leave to dry

■How to store

Please store in a well ventilated, cool place, which isn’t subject to direct sunlight.

Please don’t store in places like the following. If you do it might cause damage to the shoes:

  • Somewhere in direct sunlight

  • Somewhere that a home heater might affect them

  • In a car where it can get extremely hot

  • A place where the temperature can become high

■Points of caution when you use the shoes

  • As the fabric uses strong colours, the colour may run a little when they get overly wet, the colour may also transfer to other fabrics.
  • Please choose the appropriate size of shoes for your feet. If you don’t do so, it may cause foot pain and so on. If the fabric used causes a rash or allergic reaction, please refrain from using them.
  • Please be careful to not use knives or sharp objects near the shoes as it may cut the fabric.
  • Before use, please check that there aren’t any holes or so on, especially on the soles of the shoe. Please don’t use it if the grip of the shoes has been overly worn down.

We at Rakuful look to bring various items designed or created in Japan to the rest of the world!

Manufacturers | Shoes Manufacturers MARUGO Co.

MARUGO is based in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture. This is said to be the manufacturing centre of Jika Tabi (the shoe version, not the socks type).

Jika tabi were originally made to protect the feet of farm and agricultural workers, but they were recognised overseas as being comfortable to wear shoes and used as martial arts footwear. With many people requesting shoes that looked more stylish from overseas users, we took that in mind, and came up with a variety of new designs that incorporated the already amazing design of jika tabi.

Making tabi are just as simple as making a split in the toe area, you have to make appropriate space for the toes while not making it uncomfortable for wearers. As we have been making Tabi shoes since near their conception, we have a long history in making these types of shoes, as well as the techniques and special lasts (unique models that are used in shoe making) that allows us to make the best shoes possible.

Jika Tabi have been around for over 100 years as traditional Japanese footwear. This type of footwear has continued being used because they fit the feet well,, while also being useful when a worker wishes to keep their balance. We want to convey these amazing shoes more to people all over the world, and so we can create these various designs that incorporate this amazing type of footwear.
