The traditional letter opener has in recent times fallen by the wayside, with the vast majority of users being collectors. However with the world becoming more connected technologically, more and more people are looking to older forms of communication to give it the more personal touch. Here in Japan however, letter openers are still commonly used. Opening a letter by hand can rip the envelope and if its a letter from a loved one or something important, ripping the envelope can make keeping the letter or card in perfect condition harder.

Introducing the Oda Nobunaga Letter Opener, the ultimate letter opener created by amazingly skilled craftsmen one by one!

With one sweep of the letter opener you can safely open up your envelopes while keeping the integrity of the envelope intact, meaning you can keep your precious letters and cards for years to come!

See how cleanly you can open letters! The top envelope was opened with one of our letter openers the bottom was opened by hand

The Japanese Samurai Letter Opener is a letter opener in the style of a Katana, taking the essence of old legendary blades of famous leaders from Japanese History! Each blade is made in Seki City in Gifu Prefecture, a city famous for its cutlery, and it means that each sword is made by specialist masters of their craft, promising a quality unmatched! Nikken Cutlery has been around since 1946, and we have predominantly made knives and so on since our founding, with a focus on having tested master craftsmen create our blades.

This project marks our first adventure on a foreign crowdfunding platform after running various successful projects back in Japan, this time with an elegant and stunning new design; A letter opener that encompasses traditional Japanese Samurai culture and takes on a motif inspired by the legendary Oda Nobunaga! This time we want to bring this amazingly stylistic letter opener to fans not just in Japan but Japan-lovers all over the world!

What's more, you can display your new handmade Letter Opener for everyone to see with the stand that looks like a traditional katana stand, that is included with each return!

Each Letter Opener is carefully created one by one by a skilled knife smith ensuring quality among each knife!

Taking the motif from Oda Nobunaga, a legendary samurai leader that helped to inspire and start the beginning of the unification of Japan during the Sengoku Jidai (Warring States period), we have created a whole new Samurai Letter Opener, exclusive to this project!

The Scabbard and blade handle both take on dignified black colour, with the family crest creating a striking feature in gold on the black Scabbard.

The craftsmen found in Seki City, have a long history of creating some of the best blades in the world, and are still working and improving their craft even to this day. Each Letter Opener is made carefully and lovingly by hand, looking at perfecting the edge of the blade. Their method of tempering the blade helps to create a lasting sharpness that can cut through paper easily and durability, showing off their long years of practice and mastery.

With this campaign, we are adding a horizontal stand that you can use to display the letter opener. With it being displayed, it brings a new sense of luxury and style to your work desk!

Over the past years, many people have been importing large katanas from Japan, and with this letter opener, you can get past the large cost and import fees and display your own mini samurai sword. What’s more you can quickly remove it from the stand to use it when you want to open envelopes or packages with ease!

We have created a complete set of amazing letter openers that take on various motifs from famous generals alongside our new original design!

Oda Motif
Date Motif

Date Masamune (伊達 政宗) a daimyo or regional ruler of the north eastern area of Japan now called Tohoku, was a powerful and well known strategist. He was know as the one eyed dragon due to a missing eye. His story is well known in Japan, and was popularised even more so by Ken Watanabe in a TV drama called Dokuganryu Masumune. He is as popular or even more so than the three generals, Nobunaga Oda, Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Ieyasu Tokugawa.

Sanada Motif

Sanada Yukimura has become extremely popular of late due to the NHK Drama “Sanada Maru”. The motif of this blade takes on this popular samurai, a samurai who is said to have challenged Ieyasu Tokugawa himself with his Ten Braves.

With a striking pattern and colour, it lends itself to being displayed!

Tokugawa Motif

The Tokugawa letter opener takes on the motif of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s Sword with the scabbard featuring the Mitsuba Aoi or Triple Hollyhock the family crest for the Tokugawa house.

The final of the great unifiers, Tokugawa led Japan into a period of unification after the start of the unification period started by Oda Nobunaga.

It is said that Seki City has its beginnings nearly 800 years ago, when a famous swordsmith by the name of Motoshige moved to the area from Kyushu in the south of Japan.

A lesson in creating extremely sharp edges by master craftsmen!

Due to its abundance of useful resources for bladesmithing, such as several flowing rivers as well as the pine charcoal, makers flocked to the area. From then, Seki has been known as the City of Cutlery. Swords created in the area were held in high regard, being said to be “Unbending, Unbreakable, Unrelenting”. During the period of civil war, known as the Sengoku Age, the swords from Seki were highly sought after.

Today the city is home to a flourishing trade in various goods such as kitchen knives, scissors, razors, and so on.

People from all over the world come to experience the cutlery festival held in the city each year!

Nikken Cutlery Co., Ltd is a company based in Seki City that has been around since 1946. Our main focus is the creation of scissors and letter openers.

We mainly make scissors for many different purposes, such as kitchen scissors, cloth cutting scissors, and stationery scissors. We also create made to order scissors according to customer requests.

We have recently focused on refining both the quality of our goods as well as the design aspects leading to a large burst of original design goods!

Our main aim with this product was to help to bring back the use of letter openers while appealing to people that love Japanese Culture. In the West, we found that not many people use letter openers these days, however they still get mail that can be important. Especially today, where many people are using letters and cards to connect and create a more personal feel. So we wanted to bring this type of product, which has the added point of being in a Japanese Samurai Katana style to the West! What's more, when you use a letter opener, you get the feeling of wanting to use it more!

Creating a Letter Opener for all the enjoy!

We hope that by backing this project and receiving a letter opener for yourself, you will find yourself using it daily in a multitude of ways, making your life a little simpler but much more stylish!!

This would make a great gift for anyone that loves Japan, for those that wish to brighten someone’s day with something different, or just for making someone’s life easier.

We are looking towards the future with creating other models based on other famous generals' motifs. If you have any suggestions please let us know!

Thank you for your support!

Risks and challenges

Q1: Will It Rust? A1: Due to being made from stainless steel, it is less likely to rust in open air. However, if left wet or soaked in seawater and the like, it will be affected, so please wipe down if made wet. Q2: Will the cord tied to the scabbard come off easily? A2: The cord is tightly tied, meaning that if the letter opener and its scabbard is handled correctly it will not come undone easily. However if pulled and moved excessively there is a chance it will be undone. In the event the cord moves position, you can safely move it back to its original position. Q3: Will Shipping be ok with the pandemic? A3: We are coordinating with a logistics company to be able to send the letter openers on time when the project ends, however we don't know how the pandemic will affect things in the future, or if it gets worse. We ask for your understanding if the return takes longer to arrive than we expect. Q4: I found a product on an EC site that is similar to this one?? A4: We have created several products that takes on various designs, however for this project, we have created a wholly new design that is limited to this Project only! We want to bring this interesting stationery to the rest of the world, but it is hard to do from scratch, so we felt that this would be the best way to start!
