GREENTOY is a grow-it-yourself plant kit, that will allow anyone, from beginners to experienced gardeners, to have a little bit of greenery inside while also having a positive effect on the environment! GREENTOY will also allow you to try grow your own vegetables and so on, such as tomatoes or peppers!
With GREENTOY, we've created a new way to reuse plastic bottles. We are facing a massive environmental problem that has only increased year on year. Marine Pollution by plastic waste is one of the biggest problems that the world faces in the modern day.
During the June 2019 G20 summit, this problem was discussed with the figure of 8 million tons of plastic waste per year being announced... and this is only increasing exponentially.
We currently face the reality that by 2050, 12 billion tons of plastic waste will have been dumped into the world's seas. This would be more than the weight of the living organisms found there.
Who wants that future?
So we have come up with the following.
GREENTOY's strength lies in it's intuitive design. By using a special filter that promotes special water absorption combined with a design that helps to limit the roots from growing too much and makes the plants a more manageable size. By doing so, you can keep the plants inside and watch them grow without having to worry about leaving the plants outside in the unpredictable elements!
GREENTOY is also extremely easy to use, creates minimum waste, and we strive to use eco-friendly materials.
This filter has been created to be durable but also also for the plant roots to grow in a specific way! It's made of a blend polyester and polyolefin!
GREENTOY can also be introduced in an educational setting to help teach children about environmental issues, as well as about recycling! By encouraging children to care for their own plants, as well as letting them eat the spoils, it can be an amazing learning opportunity for them! It can be a great way for them to learn about responsibility for living things as well!

Home growing your own plants doesn't sound exactly fun filled or exciting to many. BUT! As soon as you try it out, and you see the fruits of your labour (or lack of labour needed) we can assure you that you will have a completely different opinion! We have a deep love for this product, from the environmental friendly aspect, to the ability to be able to grow your own food easily with zero mess or hassle! We developed GREENTOY here in Japan, with it originally being named Petomato (PET bottle + Tomato).
The Original PETOMATO
During the planning stage, we tried to get opinions from professional gardeners and farmers, but they felt that it would be near impossible to create a product that lets tomatoes grow from plastic bottles. After hearing this, I took it upon myself to challenge this opinion and started work on this product!
It took about 3 months to get tomatoes to grow and be in a good shape to eat and from there, the idea grew to various fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, soybeans, cucumbers, eggplants, and peppers. From there we started to see the effect on roots as well as the leaves and stems of the plants.
After our launch, we have sold approximately 5 million units of the cultivation kit, with it being a big enough hit to be displayed in certain 7-11 convenience stores, interior design stores, book stores as well as being bought as educational materials for schools! We have received such amazing amount of positive feedback, especially in regards to the positive effects that it can have on the environment as well as education!
From now, our plan is two fold.
①We want to expand our usage to outside of Japan to help promote environmental issues and the solutions to them!
②We want to renew our product, and start looking to PLA resins to make the base product, so that it is even more environmentally friendly.
Taking into consideration the cost of the creating the product as it is now, as well as creating prototypes and so forth, it is quite expensive to move forward with our goal of being completely eco-friendly. With this project we hope that by becoming more well known, we can start to create a feedback loop that will eventually allow us to hit our goals! With the corona virus also affect the world, we thought that now is a brilliant time to try hit a foreign market and allow for those that have time at home, to use the GREENTOY product to start making a small but positive effect on the environment!
After designing and creating this product over the past 10 years, we have come to have an understanding of indoor plant cultivation.
The world population will grow to and exceed 10 billion by 2050, and with that comes a multitude of problems such as rapid climate change, more worldwide pandemics and food shortages. By looking to indoor agriculture as a way to move towards being self sufficient and having less of an impact on the world.
This type of innovative technology is something that we need to expand on, and hopefully by starting with plastic bottles as a grower, we can help to reduce unnecessary waste. But we don't want to stop there, the effect on roots and leaves from cultivating indoors is something we need to focus on more, as well as looking at dwarfing and cultivating different seeds in different environments.
This technology is not only one of the solutions to the food crisis in order to maximise the production of a wide variety of plants such as vegetables, fruits and cereals in a limited space, but also has potential in the far future! It has the potential to be applied to human expansion into space and the terraforming of planets.
But those are dreams and hopes for the future so for now, please experience the excitement of harvesting your own plants using GREENTOY!
