Delicate and elegant, an artificial bonsai tree that truthfully recreate the emblematic Japanese white pine.

The Bonsai tree, born in Japan, while being a small shrub that can be grown in a pot, is shaped after the big ancient trees seen in nature. It gained a steady fan base around the world, attracted to its refined lush green and supple trunk and is often coveted as an interior decoration that brings a tranquil and serene atmosphere with its very aerial shape emblematic of Japan.

Unfortunately, the high maintenance image of the Bonsai tree and the difficulty to import it from overseas can be problematic for most. To answer those problems, we created an artificial Bonsai that will last you an eternity !

【A-BONSAI】is an unwithering, artificial Bonsai tree whose shape respects those of traditional Bonsai trees.

On top of requiring daily watering as well as regular pruning which can be troublesome, a natural Bonsai tree can require years, sometimes from a few tens to a few hundred years to reach a satisfactory, aesthetically pleasing appearance. Adding to that, a genuine Bonsai tree of decent size normally costs a few hundred thousand Yen (a couple of thousand dollars), some of them being literally priceless, making it a rather risky challenge for busy people to care for such a pricey tree without letting it wither. On the other hand, A-BONSAI allows you to enjoy the charms of a peaceful Japanese atmosphere, without all the labour a traditional Bonsai tree requires, thus we also recommend it to busy people.

With a finely textured trunk and delicate pine needles, A-BONSAI’s elaborate design truthfully recreates an authentic Japanese Bonsai tree, or more exactly a Japanese white pine, often seen near Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples and considered the most emblematic Bonsai tree.

An important thing to know about the Japanese white pine is that it is best represented in its natural state with a tree shape called Moyōgi.

Moyōgi is the name used for trees arboring a particular shape, where the trunk curves as if to form a motif. A-BONSAI’s tree trunk, whose Japanese producer boasts a thorough knowledge of Bonsai tree shapes, has been designed with a 30 degree left curve that is remarkably complicated to recreate on a genuine Bonsai tree. From the base of the trunk to the tip of each branch the curves give the tree an overall feeling of stability, vigor and elegance.

The boughs stretch in a balanced and graceful way, undeniably pleasing to the eye. Moreover, because【A-BONSAI】rigorously follows the tradition and style of the Japanese Bonsai, you get to enjoy all the charms of a genuine Bonsai tree.

There is a variety of Bonsai types, but among them the pine which has always been a standard can be considered the most representative of the classical Japanese Bonsai tree.

The pine tree has since long ago been a part of Japanese paintings as well as traditional folding screen paintings, making it, along with Mount Fuji and the cherry blossom, an emblem of japan.

Culturally the pine tree is considered the highest ranked plant in Japan. So much so that the japanese characters in the word Shōchikubai serve to express an order from the most to the least luxurious starting with the pine, bamboo and ending with the plum tree. It is also customary in Japan to decorate one’s house with a traditional pine decoration around the New Year celebration period.

With an absence of flower or autumnal color change, the pine tree maintains its green foliage regardless of the passing seasons. Even as the tree ages or during the winter, the needles remain forever green and the Bonsai retains a constant majestic appearance, making the pine tree a symbol of longevity and eternal youth and the central piece in any space.

With its foliage growing throughout the year and its branches spreading gracefully, it is a great gift to offer for the launch of a new business or to family to celebrate a long life, as a prosperity charm.

The Bonsai tree, as a full fledged tree growing in a small pot, has always been a high-maintenance plant. It requires direct exposure to the sunlight and its roots rot very easily in case of overwatering, making it extremely weather sensitive especially in rainy weather. Adding to this the frequent pruning necessary to maintain an ideal shape, which can be tricky for non professionals who do not know which branches or leaves to cut.

A-BONSAI does not require any watering or pruning whatsoever ! You will be able to enjoy an evergreen and vigorous Bonsai tree ! Even in the case where some dust settles on it it can easily be removed with a soft duster.

Be it in the living room, the entrance or the study, it gives off a very serene atmosphere and will give everyone a feel of the traditional Japanese hospitality.

A-BONSAI being made of plastic, there is no risk of the pot falling off or your hands getting dirty even if you hold the tree by its trunk. Its weight of 5kg makes it light enough to be easily transported while being very stable when put down.

Because it can create a majestic, traditional ambience, A-BONSAI also contributes to the decoration of Japanese traditional restaurants and inns. The pine being a classic among Bonsai trees, it is used year long as a decoration, removing the need of changing decorations with every season.

Toru Kajihara from J-wa International

Enrolling in the Bonsai Art Museum classes in Omiya, I am studying the creation and care of genuine Bonsai trees. Living and caring for more than ten Bonsai trees myself, I can feel the peaceful atmosphere they bring in my daily life.

However, there are several challenges that surround the Bonsai tree. Firstly, in regards to international trades,  the Bonsai, as a living plant, is subject to a very strict quarantine and thus can hardly be acquired from overseas. On top of this, the maintenance of a Bonsai being remarkably complicated, it is not exaggerated to say that it would probably wither if cared for by a person not versed in the skills and art of Bonsai growing. In Japan a lot of Bonsai classes are available to learn the craft, and attended by people with a rather high education and a lot of free time. To introduce a genuine Bonsai tree in one’s life also comes with considerable costs, and in the case where you are able to buy one of those remarkably expensive trees, watering, moderate exposure to the sunlight, pruning and the occasional transplanting are all necessities which take a lot of time. For all those reasons, growing Bonsai trees is often the hobby of a small number of well-informed people.

The development of an artificial tree and the creation of A-BONSAI, all started from the wish to make Bonsai trees accessible for people around the world to enjoy and we really hope that this crowdfunding will give us the opportunity to satisfy people who would simply like to enjoy Japan’s traditional culture.

Thanks to statistical data, we understand that a certain number of people around the world and in Japan are interested in Japan’s history, traditions and culture as well as Bonsai trees. J-wa International was established in May 2021, with the ideal of enriching the lives of many people throughout the world with creations inspired from all those aspects of Japan and we also manage the studio「WAnocoto」which offers lessons about all things Japanese, such as Kimono dressing, tea ceremony and Japanese flower arrangement but also practical lessons to let you experience traditional Japanese dance, handicraft and Japanese tea.

  • The leaves do not use any adhesive, please handle the tree carefully so as not make them fall off.
