New Stretch Goal - 3,000,000 Yen -

Cherry Blossom (Sakura) Pattern

Thanks to everyone's support, we have reached over 2,500,000 yen! With that, we have created our first stretch goal! At 3,000,000 yen, we will make a new Cherry Blossom, or Sakura in Japanese, pattern for the tumblers! This will only be available on the gold version of the tumbler, giving it an extra bit of flair!

The Cherry Blossom Pattern works the same as the original Fuji Pattern, with it needing cold drinks at 17°C or lower to activate, be this alcoholic beverages or normal soft drinks or water. (You can also use it as a normal glass, however the pattern won't appear) Watch as each flower on the tree blossoms and brings beautiful colour to your tumbler! You can see the slight variations in the pinks as they make the delicate petals!

So if you want to get your hands on these tumblers with a new pattern, think about telling all your friends as well!

The Cherry Blossom Pattern prototype in action!

With a motto of showing off the wonders and beauties of Japan to the rest of the world, we create a variety of items, such as glasses and cups that you can enjoy when you’re eating. During 2020, our main theme was “Japan’s Four Seasons”, with a focus on bringing to the West an image of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, in a glass form that many could enjoy. By doing so we wanted people all over the world to learn and feel Japanese culture and be able to relax while enjoying it. This idea of relaxing culminated in the creation of a special glass, one that is specially designed for Japanese Sake, as well as one that was a large glass.

▲Our 2020 Themed Sake Glasses

For 2021, our theme is “Japanese Traditions and Symbols”. With that in mind, the biggest symbol (literally and figuratively) of Japan is Mt. Fuji and so we used that as the base of our design. With that we came up with a tumbler that features a beautiful image of Mt. Fuji, which when unchanged still stands out on the matte white background. What’s more, the tumbler's shape itself is also made to represent the mountain, with the sides sloping inwards towards the top. Compared to our normal glass items, the matte white colour helps to create a striking image.

Mt. Fuji can be seen from various locations, and it creates a brilliant image wherever you see it!

The image that we have chosen for this cup is taken from the famous image in Yamanashi Prefecture of the Chureito Pagoda in view.

The special feature of this cup is that when you use a drink that is 17℃ or lower, the cup changes, bringing to it a whole new selection of colours, bringing pink to the cherry blossoms, and the blueish colour that Mt. Fuji has, making it seem that the mountain is covered in snow. As the drinks slowly start to move towards room temperature, you can see the colours slowly fade with it.

Of course, you don’t need to use beer or alcohol to change the colour, but also cold water, or soft beverages will change the tumbler, so please enjoy it!

Many people have an image of colour changing cups that use heat to change colour, using the Thermochromism process to change the mug when it gets hot. However it can work the other way as well, with cold items helping to change the colour of an item. Within the image, microcapsules that contain colour are affected and this causes a change in the colour.

As we said before the parts that change with this cup are:

Cherry Blossoms: Turns Pink

Mt. Fuji: Turns Blue

When it comes to creating these special colour changing parts, it is always necessary to go through a trial process, to check how the colour changes due to the heat and cold, as normally the first runs don’t come out to plan.

Unlike conventional printing on paper, it is quite normal for colours to not come out as we expect. Gold and silver, as well as Yellow are colours that are near impossible to create, and to make Red, rose or strawberry colours are layered two or three times to bring out the correct colour.

Even using the same process and techniques, when creating colour changing glass, the colour may be quite translucent and diluted, compared to when putting the image on a pure white porcelain cup. As we can’t exactly quantify the colour, we need to rely on the feelings of the craftsman to create the best image possible.

We have created three tumblers that each have a different inside colour.

We are Marumo Takagi, a traditional Japanese Pottery Maker, and in particular we specialise in the creation Mino ware(美濃焼), pottery made in the Mino Region in Gifu Prefecture. Unlike mass produced pottery, we use traditional techniques to craft each piece of pottery and earthenware by hand.

While continuing on with the traditional culturally important methods of pottery, we also want to make goods that “fit the modern day” and so we wanted to create this different style of glass.

From 1887 to Today, Carrying on traditional techniques passed down

Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture, is well known for creating some of Japanese finest pottery and earthenware. Mino ware, or minoyaki 美濃焼き, dates back over 1300 years, and is traditional Japanese pottery. Marumo Takagi strives to carry on this legacy and creates pieces even today.

Since 1300 years ago, the southern part of Gifu Prefecture has been making earthenware. Tajimi City, and the neighbouring Toki City, is well known as being the home of this Mino ware, with the area being known as “Ceramic Valley”. The traditional pottery craft has been recognised by the Japanese Government as a culturally important Traditional Craft, and there are even two craftsmen in the area that have been designated as Living National Treasures!

Our main headquarters boasts one of, if not,  the largest showrooms in all of Japan, and we supply a vast amount of catering businesses, hotels and so on with our goods. In the second year of the Heisei era, we supplied over 10,000 pieces of tableware for the first official offering of rice or Daijousai 大嘗祭, for the newly enthroned Emperor.

Plates and bowls are food’s clothes.

This saying is what we as craftsmen feel when we make tableware, when we make items for chefs, when a craftsman puts their own flair on some tableware, when we make a modern piece to fit today’s fashions, when we think about cooking, or chefs, or the environment it will be used. We think of this, while we look to carry on with this traditional way of making tableware.

While we are mainly a tableware producer, we also look to collect and broadcast a vast variety of goods from local and authentic makers, helping to put a light on Japanese products, and we currently own Japan’s largest showroom, a place that everyone can come and see, as a result.

We aim to meet the requests of various customers and clients, and to shine a light on Japanese culture, in particular the food and tableware side, for years to come.

※After cooling the glass tumbler once, the colour will become more clear after use.

※Please don’t excessive scrub the tumbler, in particular the stamp where the colour changing takes place, or it may come away from the glass.

※Please don’t use metal scourers or detergents with abrasive compounds to clean the tumbler.

※Please don’t use the tumbler in a microwave or oven.

※As the colour changing part of the glass is weak to ultraviolet light, please don’t leave for a prolonged period in exposed sunlight.

※As each tumbler has the stamp placed by hand, the position of the stamp may vary.

※The colour change may vary slightly between each tumbler.
