Story

Bringing unique Japanese Zen to your life through stylish but minimalist interior art via the Art FUJIGOKE! This selection of art pieces are made to let you bring zen into your life, helping you to find your centre and bring you inner peace.

Have you ever thought of incorporating some interior design and greenery that gives off a Japanese vibe to your daily life?

In addition to a Japanese rock garden/zen garden (karesansui) that can be enjoyed at home and are highly popular both within Japan and abroad, we have included a modern Japanese style art panel that we are introducing for the very first time!

The secret of the greenery used for this project is "FUJIGOKE". It is a rare product that uses a freeze-drying technology to lock in the green color of moss that has been cultivated near Mt. Fuji.

Japan is a country that has developed a deep culture and love of moss, which is something rare compared to other countries. Japanese people found beauty in something many do not. Thanks to Japan’s climate and producing clean water, it grows some of the most beautiful moss in the world. The existence of this moss has been associated with the aesthetic sense of "wabi-sabi", a known characteristic of beauty within Japanese culture. As a result, moss has become an important plant when talking about Japanese culture, even so much that it is mentioned in Japanese poems as well as the national anthem "Kimi ga Yo". Moss is a plant that creates a sense of Japan and its beauty entirely, which is said to be the meaning of wabi-sabi.

Moss has become an indispensable presence in Japanese-style gardens which values Japan’s elegance. In the photo above there is a garden called "karesansui" in Japanese, which is a garden style that uses sand and/or rocks to express the flow of mountains, the sea, floating islands, and rivers. Many know it as a Japaneze Zen garden or rock garden. Moss plays a vital role in creating this scenery. Without any real purpose, being able to calm your mind and look around taking everything in is how you can truly enjoy a Japanese Zen garden.

It is said that using moss to decorate is a culture that is unique to Japanese people, but in reality, it can be an indoor plant that fits with houses in various cultures. Everyone will be able to incorporate it into their homes right away.

It is with our moss items from the Art FUJIGOKE as well as the FUJIGOKE Karesansui Kit and mini FUJIGOKE set, that we hope to bring each person a time of meditation and relaxation in their busy lives.

Making an Appearance for the First Time on Kickstarter

We have prepared an item that expresses moss in an art form and can be hung on the wall. It is an interior design item that is a match between Japanese tradition and modernity.

We are pleased to say that this item is an exclusive first for Kickstarter Backers, with general sale to be held if this project takes off! We want you to experience ultimate zen with this culmination of interior art and moss first. By placing this in a workspace, you can bring nature into your area, helping you to find your centre, and letting you do your best work.

Checked Version

Tube Version

POINT ① 2 in 1

This moss art panel can be hung both vertically or horizontally

There are two different moss art pieces in this set, and you can easily remove one and hang the other. The board and the two monuments are a set, so you can change them depending on your mood and where you decide to hang it.

We have made this piece so you can change out the 4 colored checked planar art for the three-dimensional piece that has the moss arranged to resemble flowers on top of a brown cylinder.

POINT ② Committed to Using Japanese Materials

We used Japanese washi paper for the main part of the panel

The panel itself is 20mm/0.8 inches thick and is made of Japanese washi paper making it very light. The color used is “silver-blue”, a color scheme that was mixed by Japanese washi artisans in Shiojiri, Nagano prefecture. The warm tones in the gray enhances the Zen ambience of the moss.

Additionally, on the three-dimensional piece, lacquered Japanese washi paper is used for the brown material that almost resembles bamboo tube. Lacquer, or urushi, has been used for floors, walls, and pillars in Japanese buildings since long ago. So we took Japanese washi paper and dyed it with that same well known urushi. It is a color derived from nature, produces a light and sophisticated appearance, and is waterproof!

POINT ③ The 4 Colored FUJIGOKE

A design that incorporates aging and change

From a blueish green to a bright yellowish green color, the checked planar has a gradation of 4 different colors of moss. When moss is exposed to light it gradually ages showing a beautiful side of nature. We designed this art piece this way so that people could enjoy not just this unique secular change but also the balance of the four moss colors. It is a sustainable design that we thought could be beautifully used for a long time.

Panel

60cm × 45cm/ approx 24” x 18”

Thickness 2cm/ approx 0.8”

Weight 367g/ oz

This is a kit that allows you to freely create your own small karesansui world and enjoy a side of the Zen culture.

No need to water or tend to it, this kit uses natural materials are that have no chemical coloring whatsoever and are sanitary, so it can be placed even on the dining table.

The white sand represents the sea, and the rocks and moss represent an island. The kit comes in a high-quality paulownia box that looks almost like it was a gift. Inside includes two types of freeze-dried moss, stones that have been washed and boiled from lava from Mt. Fuji, white sand, and wooden tools for the raked rippled waves in the sand.

How to Enjoy the Karesansui Kit

If you'd like, you can fix or redo the sand as a final step

You can rearrange or decorate the Karesansui Kit as many times as you like. By concentrating on raking and drawing in the sand, not thinking about anything else, you can free yourself from the stressors of everyday life. Please enjoy the karesansui world that expresses your very own, original feelings and ideas.

It is said that karesansui expresses a small universe in a confined space.

So thinking of it as this universe that is the size of your palm, it is an item that lets you expand your imagination with a calm mind. We also recommend it as a substitute for decorative plants or other interior design items.

Box: 10cm x 22cm/ approx 4” x 8.6”

height 3cm/approx  1.1”

Weight: 400g/ oz

We have also created a mini cube-shaped version of karesansui that fits well in any room. The wooden box was made using a traditional Japanese architectural method called "Azekura-zukuri". The square designs on the edges are from the wood being crossed over one another and assembled. For the wood we used falcataria for its beautiful wood grain and elegant pale color.

 Box: 6.8cm x 6.8cm  /approx 2.7” x 2.7”

height 7.7cm/approx  3”

Weight: 75g/ 2.6oz

※You will receive the finished product as shown above.

※ For those that back the project for just one mini karesansui set, you will be able to choose one of the four available options after the project ends when we send out the survey to collect your shipping information.  The survey will include images numbered ① to ④ to help you select your choice.

FUJIGOKE is a freeze-dried moss that was developed from the desire of delivering the beauty of Japanese moss to many people by combining craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology. FUJIGOKE uses high-quality moss that has been carefully grown at a specialty moss farm that is at the foot of UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mt. Fuji. This Mt. Fuji moss these farmers grow is so grand it is even used at famous temples in Kyoto.

Using a special freeze-drying technique, we have found a way to keep the unique texture and beautiful color of the moss. And by doing so, it became a product that not only does not require watering but also allows those abroad to easily enjoy the green gradation of moss.

It is hard shipping plants overseas and ensuring they stay alive and well due to them having to go through quarantine/inspection. However, we found a solution to this problem by developing a freeze-drying technology that preserves the moss’s beauty, putting it in an almost taxidermy state if you were.

Once we carefully remove the unnecessary parts by hand, the moss is then sprayed with a special natural solution, and frozen instantly at -35°C/31°F.

From there the moss is slowly dried over time, becoming a processed moss thats beauty has been locked in. It has not been colored or dyed at all, nor does it fall apart when touched, ensuring you can enjoy the beautiful and original state of moss for a long time.

The Aging Process

When the moss comes into contact with sunlight or any other kind of light, its color will gradually change. As FUJIGOKE is not colored using some sort of chemicals, you will be able to enjoy the plant's natural and real color transition.

Precautions

  • Please do not water the moss as it is a maintenance-free product.
  • Please avoid hanging/setting it in places that are exposed to direct sunlight.
  • If you do not plan to use immediately, store it in a cool and shaded place.
  • Please be aware that since this is a product that uses natural materials, there are individual differences in each one.

Q&A

How long will the moss last before opening the wooden box?

You can help suppress discoloration as long as it is not exposed to direct sunlight or another form of lighting such as LED (while inside the wooden box).

Is it alright to set/hang outdoors in the yard or on the balcony?

In order to enjoy the greenery for as long as possible, in principle, we ask that you do not use it to decorate an area that is heavily exposed to sunlight or wind. The aging process will fasten if it is.

With the concept of, “being more beautiful for longer, safer, and easy to enjoy”, we are a company that develops and explores processed flowers and plants.

Ever since the foundation of our company, we have continued developing a water-soluble flower coating agent, Garde. We have researched and developed frozen flowers, which are flowers that become processed and treated using our own freeze-dry technology. Dried flowers or preserved flowers are primarily the most well known when talking about processed flowers, but frozen flowers are not colored whatsoever and are highly evaluated as natural materials that still allows you to enjoy the beautiful colors of fresh flowers.

Through trial and error, FUJIGOKE was completed using this freeze-dry technology. It is a sustainable product that we made by choosing materials that can be returned to the earth.

Not only has our Karesansui Kit been shown at exhibits and events in Japan, but also at the international tradeshow NY NOW and the online exhibit MOM: MAISON & OBJET AND MORE, becoming a popular product overseas as well.

It is through FUJIGOKE that I would like people all over the world to know the beauty of Japanese moss and have them experience Japan’s moss-loving culture.
