INDENE?

2022.4.1

The checked pattern that is particularly popular among Japanese patterns is used to make a denim jacket-like haori.

The haori is a part of the traditional Japanese kimono that is neither a jacket or a coat. It was once used by samurai as a jacket, whereas now it is usually used to wear over a kimono. We designed a kimono jacket that can be worn as a piece of casual wear so that those who love Japan and are interested in traditional clothing can get a sense of Japan easier.

This is an original product idea that we made by taking a formal kimono jacket and turning it into casual denim wear.

You can wear it casually with a shirt or any of your favorite clothes!

Point ① A Thick 12.5oz (354g), Washed Denim Fabric

This product is a luxurious full denim, with a thickness of 12.5 ounces. You will surely feel its high grade, luxurious weight when you put it on. The Ichimatsu Denim Kimono Jacket matches everyday wear thanks to denim being a textile that is easy to wear, has a unique look, and is easy to coordinate with. It does not give off too much of a big impression and, and finishes off your coordination with a light feel.

The unwashed rigid denim (raw denim) fabric does have some stiffness, but this has been washed giving it a moderately soft texture, so you can wear it comfortably. It is also difficult for the colors to transfer which is an added plus.

Point ② Check Pattern

The “ichimatsu moyou” in Japanese, known as the checked/checkered pattern in the United States and Europe, but in Japan it has existed as a traditional weaving pattern since ancient times. In particular, it is said that the Kabuki actor during the Edo period, Sanogawa Ichimatsu, used it as a kimono pattern which is why it is called ichimatsu (checked) pattern in Japanese. Even today, it is a pattern that is often used as a motif in Japanese anime and manga.

The denim kimono jacket is available in 5 colors: black, yellow, green, blue, and white. You can create a cool or more vibrant look depending on the color combination of the checks.

POINT ③ Great for Everyday Use

Each side has an outside pocket, which is something that your average kimono jacket would not have. With an opening of 15cm (approx. 6”), it is large enough to hold a long wallet.

POINT ④ Following the Traditional Style

Even if the kimono jacket is remade in a more modern style, the essential points for a traditional kimono haori are still there.

"Chi” or “Loop”: There is a hole inside the collar for the kimono jacket cord to pass through. Enjoy the traditional style of passing the kimono jacket cord from the (haori cord) set through both ends.

“Eri” or "Collar":The collar is made wide and can be worn upright if desired.

“Ude” or "Sleeves": Like a kimono, the denim kimono jacket has a wide 50cm (19.6”) sleeve which is a charming point.

With the mindset of learning from the past, the Ichimatsu Denim Kimono Jacket was born by reinterpreting good things that have been around for a long time to current times. It is a mix of both Japanese and Western styles, so it is well suited for kimonos. It can be worn in both classical and formal or casual situations.

Indigo Black is a color of similar colors that give it an overall navy hue. Simple yet textured, with a mature and elegant finish.

When looked at from a distance, the mustard yellow pattern has a brownish old feel to it due to the texture of the denim. There is no doubt that it will stand out.

The popular bluish green is the most traditional ichimatsu hue, giving it a "Taisho (era) retro" look.

Blue is a similar shade to indigo denim, giving it a slightly wild ambiance.

White has a simple and bright impression, so it is easy to match with anything, even casual wear. It is a popular coloring among women in Japan.

Kimono Jacket Bag

A denim reusable bag that is made from the same denim as the kimono jacket. You can use it for carrying your kimono jacket around.

At the bottom it has a spacious gusset, and a string attached to the opening so you can carry your contents without it getting destroyed.

100% Cotton Made in Japan

Size: Gusset approx. 18 x width approx. 35 x height approx. 52cm
                   (7” x 14”x 20”)

Weight: approx.118g (4oz)

The Kimono Jacket Cord

When you put on a haori over a kimono, you put a "haori himo" (kimono jacket cord) on the front to make it more authentic. The cord comes in 3 different colors.

The cord has a traditional Japanese knot, but you do not need to tie it each time. You can put it on or take it off using the metal fittings on either side. So it is very easy to remove.

Japan Denim
Kojima District, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture
There are two major denim production areas in Japan. Using the most famous in Japan "Kojima Denim" in Kurashiki city, Okayama prefecture’s technology for the fabric, it was sewn using the technology of "Bingo Denim" from Fukuyama City, Hiroshima prefecture.

Both Okayama and Hiroshima prefectures are regions that face the Seto Inland Sea, which has a mild climate in Japan. Surrounded by ample nature, it is well-ventilated which fits well for cotton production. Here the cotton cultivation, weaving, and dyeing (indigo dyeing) techniques have been passed down from eons ago have evolved into the production of denim.

The scenery behind the factory

The history of domestically produced denim is by no means a long one, but it is actually one of the highest quality in the world. It is said that the reason for that is, is that the craftsmen involved are highly skilled due to the influence of the underlying textile culture.

The denim made by the dexterous Japanese has a particularity about sewing and dyeing and its trait is to have more attention to detail than overseas denim. As a result of moving factories to developing countries where labor costs are low, some of these world famous and major brands have a widespread of low-priced products. So the carefully crafted Japanese denim has been gaining attention from users who want high-quality denim. Recently, made in Japan denim is being sold not only in fashion forward America and Europe but also in Southeast Asia.

After the checked denim fabric is finished by spinning (to make threads), dyeing (to dye the indigo), and woven cloth (to weave the threads into fabric), it is carefully sewn and washed revealing a lovely expression.

Material: 100% cotton (indigo dyed domestic denim)

Size:

M|Length 92cm/36.2” (base of collar to hem), sleeve length 50cm/19.6”, distance from the seam in the back of a jacket to the end of the sleeve 72cm/28.3”

L|Length 95cm/37.4” (base of collar to hem), sleeve length 50cm/19.6”, distance from the seam in the back of a jacket to the end of the sleeve 74cm/29.1”

LL|Length 98cm/38.5” (base of collar to hem), sleeve length 50cm/19.6”, distance from the seam in the back of a jacket to the end of the sleeve 76cm/30”

Weight: approx. 1.19kg/2.6lbs

Since the kimono jacket has wide sleeves, you can match the length of the sleeves and the jacket to your height. You can choose if you want a more form-fitted short or more loose and bigger size.

  • Please note that colors, designs, and sizes are subject to change.
  • While new, the color may transfer to your clothes or obi (if you have one) due to friction or sweat.
  • Please avoid washing with other clothes at the same time since the color may slightly fade.
  • After washing, please reform and dry out of direct sunlight. Leaving it wet for a long time may cause discoloration or color transfer to other parts.
  • Do not use detergents that contain chlorine bleach or with strong alkalinity as they will discolor and damage the fabric. If possible, please use a neutral laundry detergent.
  • There is a chance that the kimono jacket will lose its shape if you wash it in the washer, so please wash by hand or have it drycleaned.
  • Please rinse thoroughly.
  • Please avoid putting the kimono jacket in the dryer to prevent shrinking.
  • It may slightly shrink after washing.

TAKEMURA Inc.   Project Team

A new project "INDENE?" launched from a kimono company that was founded 65 years ago. Based on the concept of "creating an ambiance where you can enjoy kimono," we make the “unusual” product, the kimono, something that has once again became the “usual” thing you wear all the time. We will create a world where you can enjoy wearing kimonos freely.

Our company is a wholesaler of Japanese clothing manufacturers, and 5 years ago we started making denim kimonos and haori (kimono jackets) so that people can wear kimonos more freely and without reserve. We have expanded it not only to draper’s stores but to places that have never handled Japanese clothing like apparel companies, e-commerce companies, casual kimono stores, souvenir shops, etc. Fortunately thanks to that we were able to acquire more than 10,000 sales in 5 years. And yet still few people know about denim kimono and haori, so we have started a crowdfunding project as a new challenge to ourselves to increase awareness.

To make it easier for Japanese people to come into contact with Japanese traditions and "wa" (meaning harmony) freely, we chose to do a kimono jacket because it is easy to wear and coordinate with everyday clothing. As a manufacturing wholesaler, we are thinking about something that could create new values all the time, and it all started when the owner of a casual kimono store (who is one of our clients) showed us the checked ichimatsu denim fabric. From my wild and crazy idea thinking it would make an interesting fabric for a kimono jacket, I asked a factory that had previously sewn domestically produced denim kimonos and kimono jackets to make a trial production, and thus this checked ichimatsu denim kimono jacket product was completed.
