A comfortable and functional wear originated from the Zen culture in Japan!

Used by monks as work cloth for its comfort and functionality, its design also respects the monks’ decency.

  • Developed in collaboration with an ancient Zen temple in Kamakura.
  • A fabric allying softness and functionality
  • An outstanding quality Made in Japan

As room wear

For the outdoor

In your practice of mindfulness

Retaining the softness of cotton, quick drying and hard to wrinkle, it is the original easy care material used only in our Kamakura shirts!

Developed by one of Japan’s leading textile manufacturer and a world renown denim maker

This special fabric is born from the collaboration between the Unitika Tokiwa factory in Okayama, which boast the highest level of spinning technology in all of Japan, and Kaihara Denim, a fabric manufacturer based in Fukuyama in the Hiroshima prefecture, that produces denim all around the world.

Texture & functionality

The use of this patented fabric called PALPA premium is exclusive to our company.

PALPA Premium is a unique type of yarn, first of its kind, that saw the light of day after 3 years of piling prototypes over prototypes.

In most cases, “easy care” products are made functional by spraying resin or such onto the fabric or the finished product.

For this reason, even 100% natural materials end up with a texture far from “natural”.

The material we use has polyester fibers with excellent functionality wrapped in high-quality cotton that feels good against the skin.

This ideal thread thus combines ease of care with the pleasant texture of natural materials.

Quick drying

Cotton is a very water absorbent material, but takes time to dry.

On the other hand, polyester is a quick drying material, but has an inferior water absorption capacity.

With PALPA, the cotton outer layer absorbs moisture, while the polyester core hastens the drying process, taking advantage of the specificities of each material!

As a result, this fabric dries about 3 times faster than 100% cotton fabric.

This particularity is easily observed on humid days, when washing during night time, when hanging to dry indoors, or when getting the shirt wet or sweating during hot days.

Wrinkle-resistant & easy care

Wrinkle resistance is usually obtained by spraying chemicals such as coatings or resins on the surface of the fabric, but the same effect can actually be obtained through a special structure of the yarn itself. This fabric obtained a grade of 3.5 on the W&W (wash and wear) index.

Environmentally friendly yarn

  • The polyester at the core of the thread is made using recycled plastic bottles.
  • By blending Australian cotton with outstanding whiteness, we keep the amount of bleaching agents and water used for washing to a minimum.
  • By using polyester for the thread’s core, we reduce the quantity of cotton used by approximately 30%.

We, Maker’s Shirt Kamakura, are an apparel manufacturer based in the city of Kamakura, in the Kanagawa prefecture, focusing on the manufacture of dress shirts for men.

This project started with a request from the chief priest of Jōchi-ji Temple in Kamakura. “It is getting difficult to procure good quality samue”. “With your techniques, would you be able to produce samue for us?”.

As dress shirt specialists, we were a little worried about our capacity to make samue, but we also thought that, with the guidance of an expert in samue such as the chief priest, we could make something amazing! And with this our samue making journey started.

Development of the product with the temple’s monks

The samue is originally the work attire of Zen Buddhist monks, and it is still used on a daily basis.

Thus, we decided to identify the problems and what could be improved with our samue by having the monks of various temples in Kamakura, starting with Jōchi-ji Temple, use the first sample products.

After a few weeks, we received numerous comments, be it on the size, the material, the number and position of pockets or the position of the tag.

After taking into account these various opinions, we made a new sample, had it tested again, received more feedback, and improved it some more. By repeating this process a number of times, we gradually got closer and closer to the work outfit the temples’ monks desired, and after more than a year of development, the “ultimate work outfit” was finally completed!

Sewing

We entrusted a domestic sewing factory that has been working with us on sewing dress shirts for years, with the sewing of the samue.

This samue is a high-quality product crafted using advanced techniques, starting with the precise stitching coming from years of sewing dress shirts.

Pockets

As the waist pocket, which is hidden when worn, is often used by temple staff to hold smartphones, it is equipped with a flap and zip fastener to prevent belongings from falling off.

The inner pocket is sewn at an angle that makes taking out its content easier!

In addition, by including a hip pocket, not usually found on a classic samue, it becomes even more convenient!

Silhouette

We incorporated our knowledge of western style clothing, especially dress shirts, into the fabrication of this traditional Japanese garment. The result is an overall elegant silhouette!

The tapered pants, in particular, have a refined design, without compromising on comfort.

Pants fastener

For smoother putting on and taking off, in addition to the elastic at the waist, the pants also have a fastener, not usually found on a classic samue.

Sleeves and hem

Just like on a classic samue, our samue is also equipped with elastics around the ankles and wrists. Roll up your sleeves in a flash as you concentrate on your work!

Design

The top part gives off a stylish vibe, just as a jacket would, and the chest area, which often gets undone too easily on classic models, has been designed to stay in place at all times. In addition, the hem of the jacket has been carefully adjusted so that the bottom and top layer would stack perfectly with each other, and that no fabric from the bottom layer would stick out. It is a truly unique and beautiful design!

Precautions
※This product is made of denim that uses indigo dye.
Please beware of color transfer due to friction etc. while wearing the product. Color fading will occur with each washing.
Make sure to wash this product by itself, separately from other garments, especially from the 1st to the 3rd washing, as the color is the most susceptible to fading during those times.
For subsequent washing, please separate this product from other textiles as much as possible, flip it inside out and put it in a net before washing.
If friction happens, the color might transfer to light-colored bags. We also recommend wearing underwear of a similar shade.
